The Hudson Valley is the most beautiful place in America and I want to keep it that way.
The Hudson River Habitat Restoration Act, which I authored, has provided funds to New York to preserve and protect the Hudson River, improve water quality and protect the pristine environment of the Hudson Highlands.
The Highlands Preservation Act authorized the use of federal funds for the purchase and conservation of open space in the Hudson Valley.
I also authored the Clean Water Infrastructure Financing Act, which would provide critically needed funds to the Hudson Valley communities to upgrade, protect and improve their water infrastructure systems, and successfully fought against an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposal that would have allowed more wastewater to be released into the Hudson.
In the Hudson Valley, I have worked to ensure the federal government does its job in cleaning up areas that have been affected by water contamination. We successfully pressured the EPA to declare the Hopewell Precision Site in Dutchess County a Superfund site, adding the area to EPA’s National Priorities List. The declaration expedited the restoration of air quality and drinking water supplies, including the installation of water filtration units and air ventilation systems in contaminated homes. We also secured $325,000 for Brownfields Redevelopment Cleanup of the former Statewide Oil Property and the former Erie-Lackawanna Roundhouse Site in Orange County.
In votes cast on the House floor, I have opposed weakening air pollution standards, against measure that would have weakened the Clean Water and Endangered Species acts, against drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), against cuts in environmental enforcement, and against the sale of public lands.
And I’m working hard to spur much-needed action on global warming. I’m a sponsor of both the Clean Smokestacks Act and the Climate Stewardship Act. These bills place reasonable caps on pollutants such as carbon dioxide which are poisoning our air and contributing to global warming.
Over the years I have received high scores from the League of Conservation voters. My scores dipped in 2005 only because a close family member passed away during a period when several floor votes were scheduled. Had I been able to vote, I would have had the same high rating in 2005 that I have enjoyed since the 1990’s.
