One of the greatest challenges facing the United States is overcoming our dependence on foreign oil and fossil fuels. For too long, U.S. foreign policy has been shaped by our dependence on foreign oil. Money paid by American motorists has too often found its way into the hands of Middle Eastern terrorists. I hope to see the day when our energy needs are met from resources here at home rather than oil drilled in the sands of the Middle East.

The Fuel Choices for American Security Act, which I have co-sponsored, is a step in the right direction. It would:

*Improve vehicle and fuel technologies
*Increase the production and use of renewable fuels
*Create new incentives for companies to sell different kinds of fuel at retail outlets.
*Hasten the availability of more energy-efficient vehicles to the public

Rather than offer tax breaks for energy companies, I believe the tax code should be altered to spur new investments in wind, solar and hydro-electric power, ethanol production, and bio technology to develop new sources of energy from crops, vegetation and animal waste. In addition to this stronger focus on alternative and renewable energy sources, I believe that significantly more must be done to improve the fuel economy standards of our vehicles.

In 1961, after Sputnik was launched by the Soviet Union, President John F. Kennedy rallied our country to put a man on the moon within a decade. We succeeded because we set a clear national goal and committed the resources to make it happen. Freeing the United States from its addiction of foreign oil is no less a national urgency today than was winning the Cold War during Kennedy’s time.
