Seniors and Retirement Security

Social Security is the pillar of retirement security for millions of New Yorkers and we must protect it. I have opposed efforts and legislation to ‘privatize’ Social Security because they lacked guarantees that retiree benefits would be protected.

To be sure, as the baby boom generation continues to reach the age of retirement and the number of Americans eligible for Social Security increase, there will be strains on a system that has served America well since its inception. Over time, I believe future Congresses can make minor modifications the program to protect the solvency of the Social Security System well into the future.

Protecting Social Security however, is not the only thing that must be done to ensure retirement security for an aging population.

I supported the prescription drug bill passed by the Congress that helps seniors pay for prescription medication. There are approximately 90,400 Medicare Beneficiaries in the 19th Congressional District and I am happy to say that the vast majority have enrolled in Medicare Part D. I also supported extending the enrollment period, giving extra time to seniors to study which plan was best suited for them.

As important as Social Security and Medicare is to retirement security, they alone are no longer enough.

I supported the Senior Citizens Freedom to Work Act, which allowed seniors to continue working without fear of losing their Social Security benefits, and repeal of the Clinton era tax increase on Social Security benefits.

Congress has also passed a number of measures through the years to make it easier for Americans to establish Individual Retirement Accounts, Simplified Employee Pensions plans, 401 (k), and changes in the tax code that reward Americans for saving and investing. I am happy to have been part of those efforts and will continue looking for ways to make it easier for Americans to save for their retirement.
