Sue Kelly: Homeowners Tax Relief Act WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Sue Kelly has introduced the Homeowners Tax Relief Act, legislation which would create an addition federal income tax deduction for those who pay property tax rates that are higher than the national average. The bill would lower the property tax burden of many homeowners in the Hudson Valley. New Yorkers pay some of the highest property taxes in the nation, and the state ranks near the top in the state and local tax burden.
“A new federal tax deduction for property and school taxes will bring some relief to local residents who are finding their tax rates increasing faster than their salaries,” Kelly said.
The legislation introduced by Kelly would allow the property tax deduction, regardless of whether the taxpayer itemized their returns or takes the standard deduction.
