House Passes Kelly Bill to Better Protect Children from Online Sexual Predators

WASHINGTON – The House of Representatives this week passed The Deleting Online Predators Act, legislation co-sponsored by Congresswoman Sue Kelly.

The legislation would prohibit schools and public libraries that received universal funding from allowing a child access to social networking sites or chat rooms unless parents first grant permission.

Chat rooms are commonly used by sexual predators to lure unsuspecting children into encounters outside the home and into situations where the child can be exploited.

“Our legislation helps prevent online predators from connecting with our children through a computer at a school or library where there is limited adult supervision,” Kelly said. “Social networking sites and chat rooms can be a serious danger to millions of unsuspecting children. This bill makes sure that only parents can decide if and when they want their children to have access to these sites when using the Internet at a school or library.”
